When we talk about the expensive phones, only two come in our minds, Apple and Samsung. But what a person who wants to buy an expensive phone and hates these two companies should do? Well here is the answer. Sony is one those companies that makes both expensive as well as budget smartphones. Recently, it launched a phone namely, XZ1. So lets head towards the Sony Xperia XZ1 Review.

Sony Xperia XZ1 Review

Talking about the design, the phone is not having any kind of 2017 type of feel. The front of the phone looks very similar to what Sony was doing 2-3 Years ago. The back of the phone looks more modern. The back of the phone is made more sleeker. I would say that the design of this one is kinda like similar to the design of the iPod Touch as it is have the back that melts over the entire phone.

Other than that, at the right side of the phone, we get the power button along with the volume rockers. I really like the buttons on the xperia phones because they are huge and reachable. The volume rockers are much smaller so that you can easily distinguish between the power button and volume rockers. Sony is still moving on with the camera button. This is the thing that I like about Sony because this provides faster camera toggles and better capturing experience.

Talking about the right side though, its made to look more clear by just including the sim and the memory card slot. The edges of the phone are rounded providing you the best possible grip. At the top, we get the headphone jack along with the microphone used for the noise canceling. For me personally, the positioning of the headphone jack is not perfect in this case. I prefer it to be placed somewhere at the bottom so that I can put the phone into the pocket while the headphones are still connected. But if you are a kind of a person who likes using wireless earphones, then this is not a big issue.

Now coming over to the back of the phone. It looks similar to the Xperia L if you just leave the melting sides for a second. The back is made up of plastic along with the Xperia logo at the middle. The camera is aligned along the corner and seems to protrude little bit. But its little bit not much but little bit. This is not going create any problem while kept on the table. However, it can get some amount of scratches on the glass covering the lens but I believe the glass used here is of good quality. At the side, one can see the flash and NFC again covered with the glass.

Front of the phone is still having a larger chin and forehead. I would say that sony could have made the display bezel less because they have left a lot of space at the top and at the bottom. However, we are getting front firing speakers which I prefer the most, but still it would have great if Sony included the bezel less display or we can call the 2017’s essential.

When you actually use the phone, you interact with the display. These days, people mostly prefer the OLED technology which Sony has not taken into much consideration. The display included in the Sony Xperia XZ1 is still the IPS LCD capacitive display having above 16 M colors. Now this is the display that sony is moving on with from the past 4 years. And if you are telling someone not to buy this phone, then this is the reason.

Due to the skipping of OLED display, the colors look bit flushed out. The always on display thing that is included is supposed to only wake some pixels of the display but here the whole display seems to wake. This feature would have functioned more perfectly if Sony included the OLED display panel.

Other than this, the 5.2 inch Xperia XZ1 is having the resolution of 1920×1080. Now again, not met my expectations because Sony once included a 4K display in the Xperia Z5 Premium which came out in the same price point. But there are some of the sony included technologies that make this display to look more attractive.

Triluminos Display

Triluminos display is a technology that enables a normal LCD display to show much wider range of colors and hence making the display to show imaged that are more vivid. According to the MIT Technology review, a display having this technology can show 50 percent more color gamuts than that of a normal conventional LCD display. This is possible only by using Quantum Dots. The Triluminos display included in the Xperia XZ1 is having the exact same technology.

Quantum dots are best described as light-emitting nanoparticles. Basically, they are very small (2-10 nanometers) particles of a material that emits light. Depending on the size of the particle, which can be controlled precisely, quantum dots emit light in a specific wavelength, which the human eye perceives as a specific color.

Conventional LCD displays use a white backlight that passes through red, blue, and green filters to form the color that the user perceives. The problem with this approach is that filters are not very selective – in other words, it’s hard to form very specific colors, and the end result are washed out colors. With Triluminos, the white backlight is replaced by a blue LED, which emits a blue light that causes a film of quantum dots to produce pure green and pure red. The different wavelength light is combined to form the color on the screen. This way the display can show more pure, unadulterated colors.

The blue triangle is the color space of a conventional LCD, the red triangle is Triluminos.

Triluminos tech should allow the Sony Xperia XZ1 to compete with the Super AMOLED displays on Samsung flagships, which are recognized for their rich colors. That’s the theory at least, and there are other factors that determine the quality of a display, such as contrast, brightness, visibility in sunlight, and viewing angles.

X-Reality is an image processing technology that enhances the images and videos displayed on the Xperia XZ1. It makes pictures look sharper, reduces noise, improves contrast, and fine tunes saturation.

Sony has been using the X-Reality and X-Reality Pro image processors on its high-end TVs for a while now, though it’s not clear to us if X-Reality for mobile is the same thing.

So, how does X-Reality work? According to Sony, the software breaks down the signal sent to the display into several components – texture, outline, contrast, and color. Each one is separately analyzed and processed, to ensure the clearest, sharpest, most attractive final image.

Of course, results may vary. The videos of your kittens that you filmed with your old 3MP camera phone won’t magically turn into crystal-clear, high definition masterpieces. But in some situations, X Reality will make content look noticeably better.

Here’s a demo of the X-Reality technology in action.

So at the end, we can say that the display is not as good as the OLED but these two technologies tend to make it look more good. Anyways, lets move on.

Don’t Miss:- The iPhone X Impressions

The phone comes with the Snapdragon Qualcomm 835 and runs perfectly fine. I have hardly noticed any lag but this one is still having some bugs but that is not a big problem as it will be fixed by the future updates. The CPU here is Octa Core and the GPU included is Adreno 540. Everything is latest here, so you can expect spending quality time with this one.

The phone allows you to store about 64 GB of data but you can always insert a micro sdcard to expand store some more data. The phone is made more smoother by the 4GB RAM. Not the biggest number in the world but it can meet your expectations if you are using it for normal usage. It can even hold heavy gaming but will start lagging after about 40 Minutes of continuous gaming.

Sony Xperia XZ1 Review

Believe or not, sony phones are famous for the camera performance. I think you people remember those days when Sony phones contained a camera with more than 20 MP sensor and this increases our expectations more. Xperia XZ1 here seems to perform better than any other smartphone.

Primary Camera

The Xperia XZ1 is having 19 MP rear camera with auto focus and phase detection. There is no Optical Image Stabilization but it is having Electronic Image Stabilization that uses the phone’s gyroscope. Talking about the video, it can [email protected], [email protected]/60fps, [email protected]

I am testing the camera of this phone from the last 2 weeks and the results which I got were fabulous.

Shots taken from Xperia XZ1

However, the camera seems to get little bit worse in focusing the persons which means you cannot get portrait shots from this one. The camera actually performed well in taking the pan shots.

Front Camera

The front camera actually performs better than the back one if you want to take a picture of a person. This is made possible with the 13 MP sensor which is also having Electronic Image Stabilization. The shots taken from the front one were more accurate. The addition of the Augmented reality in the front camera, makes the photo capturing more fun. You can use avatars on your face and that is accurate too.

If you are buying this one for videography then what are you waiting for? Go ahead. This is the best video phone ever. The 4K video on this one looks very vivid and live. Following is a small test.

The Xperia XZ1 is package containing the latest and the greatest processor and high quality GPU which means that testing this one with heavy games will be legit. So that’s what I did here. I tested different games and following are the results.

Grand Theft Auto San-Andreas

Sony Xperia XZ1 Review

The game runs smoothly on this one. The colors were vivid and more brighter looking. However the phone seemed to freak out little bit after increasing the Graphics. The temperature of the phone increased after 10 – 15 minutes of continuous gaming. But after comparing different games, I found that this was not that very high.

Sony Xperia XZ1 Review

Now I know that this is a basic game. But I played this one after overclocking the processor. The game looked the perform much better than I thought but after 30 minutes of continuous gaming, the phone became hot again. I think this happened due to the overclocking of the processor but the temperature was not as high as it was in GTA SA.

Nova – 3

Sony Xperia XZ1 Review

My experience with this one was the best than any game I have played. I was able to get good graphics and smooth gaming experience. I am impressed that the game was well optimized and the temperature was also normal.

Coming over to the main question, should you buy it or not. Well yes, but only if you hate Apple And Samsung. However, the design is not the modern as compared to the Galaxy S8 and Note 8. There are a lot of phones that you can buy in this price line. Making of the phone is good enough and at the same time if is having great processor.
